
Gastric cancer
Gastric cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the stomach.
Risk factors of gastric cancer are:
1. H pylori infection with chronic atrophic gastritis/metaplasia/dysplasia
2. Gastric adenoma
3. Smoking
4. Hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer
5. Juvenile polyposis
6. Peutz jeghers Syndrome
7. Obesity
8. Cigarette smoking
Clinical symptoms
1. Vomiting
2. Hemetemesis
3. Pain abdomen
4. Post prandial fullness
5. Anorexia
6. Weight loss
Diagnosis and staging
1. Endoscopy is the investigation of choice for diagnosis of gastric cancer. Findings on endoscopy are gastric ulcer with raised margins, growth in the stomach
2. CECT abdomen is done in every patient for assessment of resectibility
3. PET scan plays a limited role in these patients
Treatment
1. In patients with resectable tumor, surgery is the treatment of choice
